साक्षरता दिवस हर साल 8 सितम्बर को राष्ट्रिय और अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय डे के रूप में पुरे विश्व में मनाया जाता हैं | साक्षरता दिवस मनाने का मुख्य उद्देश्य अपने समाज व देश के लोगो में जागरूकता बढ़ाना समाज के सभी वर्गो तक शिक्षा के संदेश को पहुचाना और एक साक्षर दुनिया का निर्माण करना है | 8 सितम्बर को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय साक्षरता दिवस मनाने की घोषणा 17 नवम्बर 1965 को सयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के शैक्षिक, वैज्ञानिक और सांस्कृतिक संगठन द्वारा की गई | हर साल साक्षरता दिवस को एक नई थीम और लक्ष्य निर्धारित कर मनाया जाता हैं |

भारत प्राचीन समय में विश्व गुरु कहलाता था, मगर आज हालत यह हैं कि कुल आबादी का एक चौथाई तक़रीबन 30 करोड़ लोग आज भी अशिक्षित हैं | इस असफलता के पीछे हमारी सरकारों और समाज दोनों की गलतियाँ बराबर जिम्मेदार हैं | 2011 में हुई जनगणन के आकड़ो पर हम नजर डाले तो मात्र 4 फीसदी ही महिलाएँ साक्षर हो पाई हैं | 2001 की जनगणना में महिलओं की साक्षरता दर 60 फीसदी के आस-पास थी जो अब 64 तक ही बढ़ पाई हैं | गणतंत्र राष्ट्र के शिक्षित नागरिक ही अपने कर्तव्यो और अधिकारों के लिए जागरूक होकर इनका सही उपयोग कर सकता हैं | शिक्षित युवाओं द्वारा सक्रिय भूमिका निभाने से वर्तमान स्थति में काफी हद तक सुधार लाया जा सकता हैं | साक्षरता के महत्व को समझते हुए International Literacy Day की पहल शिक्षा के प्रचार-प्रचार में अहम हथियार हैं |

साक्षरता दर बढ़ाने के लिए किये गये प्रयासों में हमारे देश व् विभिन्न राज्यों की बात करे तो आज सभी राज्यों में अनिवार्य बाल शिक्षा अधिनियम को शिक्षा के अधिकार के रूप में जगह दी गई हैं | लेकिन एक कानून को मौलिक अधिकार बना देने के बावजूद क्या 6 से 14 वर्ष के सभी बच्चे स्कुलो तक पहुच पाए. क्या बाल श्रम पर पूर्ण रोक लग पाई | ये सवाल हमारे दिलों दिमाग को तब तक कोसते रहेंगे, जब तक समाज के हर तबके का व्यक्ति शिक्षा के प्रति जाग्रत नही हो जाता | जरुरत हैं इस तरह के कानूनों को आमजन तक पहुचाने की ओर उन्हें इसके प्रति जागरूक करने की | तभी असल में विश्व साक्षरता दिवस मनाने का उद्देश्य सच्चे अर्थो में साकार होगा |

World Literacy Day celebrated every year to spread awareness about the importance of literacy to individuals, societies and communities around the world and to increase literacy rate. 8 September was declare as International Literacy Day on 17 November 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It was first celebrated in 1966. The main objective of celebrating International Literacy Day is to encourage awareness of literacy so that everyone knows their social and personal rights.

Literacy needed for social and personal development. In view of the high growth rate of poverty, uncontrolled population growth, gender inequality etc., UNESCO decided to celebrate Literacy Day with a goal to overcome these problems. Literacy contributes immensely to the overall development and upliftment of the nation. Literacy is not only a way to get employment, but it encourages knowing human rights so that everyone gets what they are entitled to. Many people face humiliation every day due to illiteracy. In addition, they make their lives full of struggles. Therefore, to use community resources to create a better world, literacy is of the utmost importance.
